The Lost Ones

The Surgeon

The Sherpa

The Spirit Guide

The 'Lost Ones' are the main inhabitants of the World of Coma, being coma victims who never found their way back to the real world. They have banded together in a tribe, and wear trinkets which remind themselves of their previous lives.

The surgeon is the first character that the protagonist Simon encounters in the world of the coma, and despite his fearful appearance, is actually quite a gentle being.

The other main human protagonist is the 'Spirit Guide', an eight year old girl with a mysterious connection to Simon.

The Sherpa is one of Simon's constant companions through his journey, representing the baggage of his real life that is always with him.

THE PUPPETS OF COMA

There can also be something very eerie and unsettling about puppetry, especially

when they are not acting the way you might expect, or appear unusual, as with

otherwise ‘cutesy’ puppets with rotten teeth or dead white eyes. Puppetry

is a rarely utilized art in New Zealand film, with the most famous example

being Peter Jackson’s ‘Meet the Feebles’, which was made nearly 20 years

ago. I want to broaden its exposure in this country and attempt something

new with thisfine art form, ensuring the unique nature of this film.
